Description

Published in 2014 by the University of New Mexico Press, this volume summarizes our 2011 conference held at the Hibben Center at the University of New Mexico. The conference commemorated the 1983 symposium Astronomy and Ceremony in the Prehistoric Southwest and took a forward-thinking look at the relationship between studies in cultural astronomy, Southwestern anthropology and the Native American or indigenous peoples that have long been the subjects of such research. The book examines the relationship of Mesoamerican cultures with the American Southwest, specifically Chaco Canyon, and looks at sites associated with observing the cycles of the Sun and Moon in the Central Mesa Verde region. This conference and publication formed the basis for establishing the Society for Cultural Astronomy in the American Southwest, Inc. as a Colorado Nonprofit Corporation.
